# Pointing clients at DNZ

> Make devices on your network use DNZ as their DNS server.

**Router / DHCP**

Set the DNS server handed out by DHCP to the DNZ server's IP address. Every device on the network
then uses DNZ when it renews its lease.

If you run two DNZ servers (see [Replication](/dns/replication)), hand out both.

**One device**

Set the device's DNS server manually to the DNZ server's IP address in its network settings.

**Encrypted**

Phones, laptops and browsers can use DNZ over DNS over TLS, HTTPS or QUIC once DNZ has a
certificate. See [Encrypted DNS](/dns/encrypted-dns#connect-devices).

## Test from a client

```bash theme={null}
dig @192.168.1.10 example.com
nslookup example.com 192.168.1.10
```

The query should show up under **DNS → Query Logs** with the client's address. Names in your zones
appear in the division's log; forwarded names appear in the **All queries** view, which
superadmins see.

## Per-network behavior

What a client gets can depend on its address:

* [Views](/dns/views) answer a name differently for internal and external networks.
* [Filtering](/dns/filtering) picks a division's blocklists by client network.
* [Conditional forwarding](/dns/forwarding#conditional-forwarding) can send everything some clients
  ask to other servers.
